Tips for Getting Good Job References

Not too many people go around discussing these things. It’s just something we all have to know how to do. The best people to call on when in need of references are:

It's not advisable to use coworkers you've known only a short time or relatives.

Always ask before using someone as a reference. Ask politely and approach it in a positive and flattering way. Usually, people are receptive; but, if not, it's a good idea not to push. Instead find another reference that is more upbeat and positive. Keep in close contact with your references and be appreciative of their efforts.

While asking permission, take the opportunity to verify that you have current addresses and phone numbers. You will also want to prepare your references with data so they can respond effectively to prospective employer's questions. This includes a current resume. This data will provide your references with supporting information that concurs with your story.

References often receive insufficient attention. Many potential employers never ask for references, and some that do ask never bother to check them. Despite this reality, always be prepared to provide 3-4 good solid references.
